Reclaim Your Enjoyment - Take Control - SOMBC

Technical Overview
The technical & functional aspect for SOMBC is some steps further than a Laptop would yield.
Here is a detailed list and pictures for all the components belonging to the SOMBC. Almost all parts
needed some adjustments and stripping of plastic, covers and a wealth of extension cables for most
of the connectors had to be remade. The search for the actual components was really just pure luck,
as I couldn't use the physical measurements used on the specifications for the separate components to use
when designing the 3D model. All the components had to be bought, stripped of any covers etc, and luckily
all the components fitted into the briefcase, with only as little as 0.5cm to go on in most cases.
No hardware had to be removed or rebought in another version or anything, everything just fitted right away!
Let me tell you, this is how pure luck looks like in the physical world. :-) Luck...manifest yourself!
I have included the prices as they were at the time of purchase in both NOK and Dollars.
Click on all the picture to get them in high resolution!

The display chosen was:
BenQ 15" LCD Monitor, FP51G
This due because the nice price and the ultra slimness.
The quality is very good, and the specifications also suitable.

up real drastically...

The 15" Widescreen Laptop case chosen was:
Clas Ohlson 31-3760
due to it's slimmest possible design and the chrome/black materials, I just love chrome!
I must admit it could have been slightly larger, but it was anyway possible to fit 95% of the things I wanted inside it.
The only things that did not fit on the inside was a 12cm fan, and the Wireless LAN USB Stick. Were instead placed on the back.
The briefcase was dismantled and modified drastically.
PRICE: 269,- NOK ($42)

The videograbber chosen was:
Plextor PX-M402U/T3
yet again due to it's nice price and just what I searched for in support
for grabbing old-school anno 1967 PAL/NTSC signals. Bluerk!
The plastic cover and the 9V power supply was dismantled beyond recognition.
Video PAL (720x576, 352x576, 352x288).

The hardrive and cooling chosen was:
WD 4000KD SATA
Zalman ZM-2HC2 Cooler
due to the price vs size (not enough still, but anyway). The cooler was also...yep...cool!

Average Latency 4.20 ms (nominal)

Cooler PRICE: 167,- NOK ($26)

|
The DVD burner chosen was:
NEC ND-6650 SlimLine DVD
due to the price vs options. This baby got it all, +/-, cd/dvd including dual layer. The size is perfect for the SOMBC.
DVD +-R 8x Writing, 8x Read.
DVD +-R (DL) 4x Writing, 5x Read.
CD-R 24x Writing, 24x Read.
PRICE: 669,- NOK ($106)

The Wireless IR keyboard/mouse chosen was:
Apperantly NoName ACK-573 Keyboard/Trackerball
this time NOT due to the price. Think it was overpriced since the trackerball quality is LOW. Feels like a lightweight chewing gum ball.
The keyboard layout is also very irritating, but the keys are a thrill to type with.
Anyway, the feature of having the trackerball and mouse buttons into the keyboard was just genious, less stuff to carry around. Only keyboard I found.
The receiver was dismantled beyond recognition.
I also had to modify the trackerball sensors, as these were also quite lame and unstable. Some solder and bending fixed it. Damn ChinaWare!!!
1 x PS/2 Mouse Connector.
1 x PS/2 Keyboard Connector.
IR useable within 7 meters, 45° angle.
PRICE: 518,- NOK ($82)
|

|
The Memory Card reader chosen was:
Apacer Mega Steno MGA 20 - 14-in-1
Nice little thingy supporting a wealth of cards:
MC/SD/CF(I&II)/MD/SM/MS/MS Pro > USB2.0
The unit was dismantled beyond recognition.
PRICE: 74,- NOK ($11)
|

|
The Media Remote Control chosen was:
Trust Remote NB-5100p
because of it's very nice slim design and programmability. The software can be configured to any "front-running" software
via easy ini files or with the TRUST visual button software.
However, I managed to destroy 2 pcs of these. I tried to lengten the cables on the IR and when I inserted into the
USB port, something broke and was not recoverable. It was not heat, it was not bad soldering but probably some very
narrow ohm limits somewhere. I then removed the USB connector and lengthen the cables there instead to fit it into
the corner of SOMBC front.
IR useble within 7 meters, and max 30° angle.
PRICE: 266,- NOK ($42)
|

|
The 54Mbps Wireless LAN Stick chosen was:
3Com 3CRUSB10075 Stick
Just because I liked it, and was NOT D-LINK related. I also use a 3COM Office Connect router for connection to this.
I initially mounted it inside SOMBC, but the signal strength got to low due to some metal casing.
It was later mounted on the outside....but still I'm not satisfied by the range...100meters they say indoors...nahhhh bullshit in all respect!
Indoors: 100 meters (328 feet)
Outdoors: 400 meters (1312 feet)
PRICE: 287,- NOK ($45)
|

|
The Bluetooth Device chosen was:
C|Net CBD-021 USB Stick
The size of this thing is just amazing, really cool gadget. I guess it works okey, don't have any bluetooth devices
in my flat yet.
Tried networking with it. Good luck I must say, it was a real pain to get the LAN network bit to
work. Anyway, if you have 3 days+ available - take a shot!
Indoors: 100 meters (328 feet)
Outdoors: 400 meters (1312 feet)
PRICE: 287,- NOK ($45)
|

|
The Power Supply chosen is unknown at this time, because the sticker is trashed:) I got this
from my job, but the spec was 300W ATX Style Power.
It had to be modified a little bit. 1 fan had to go, the top casing was removed, cables where
cut as much as possible, glue was added and two 12V mini slim fans was added.
PRICE: 0,- NOK ($0)
|

|
This is the connector which connect the DVD rom mini IDE connector or something to a standard
40pin size IDE header. Just an adapter and was found in my "misc garbage" boxes.
PRICE: 0,- NOK ($0)
