Recent updates on tracing the origins of Amiga used related artwork
in Nostalgia | Monday, April 08, 2024 | 00:22

This is an update to recent discoveries I have made in an attempt to identify and find all the digital representation files used in the making of Commodore's 1987 promotional video "Amiga 500 Promotional Video". In norway it was called "Computer Video'n - Amiga 500 - Commodore".

A quick recap

First, this is an addon to a years long project I've been working on, which you can check out here: Computer Video - Amiga 500/2000 Promotional 1987 Video - Introduction

In december 2022 I tried an experiment onto 1 of my newly created YouTube channels (Old-school Computer Stuff) to explore the success of producing Youtube Shorts first, well, what can we say about YouTube shorts?

They are ASS and its a lame copy of the even more lame braindead world of TikTok. So, what the hell would I expect :-)

Anyway, I posted a tiny post on English Amiga Forum: Amiga - The Movie 1987" Christmas Calendar - Find that item!, It got two reponses from the same guy, which didn't understand the point at first, but once I explained he (Photon) was all aboard. Sadly, nobody else came to comment or even try to unravel the mystery.

How did it go on Youtube then? Haha, total failure naturally, as the YouTube shorts are made for stupid people with stupid content. Clearly mine was too advanced, too fresh, needed 1% of brain power from viewers and non-trendy, so a huge bunch of them (for months) got ZERO views. I should not complain though, as I'm a complete noob for the YouTube worlds of creative ORIGINAL content and I should just let it sit and mature for a couple of years before I claim a YouTube throne, haha.

Here the entire playlist 31 video playlist.

Well, enough of that modern shit, lets deep dive into more proper and cool old tech stuff which is to try an identify all graphics, animations, software etc. used in that 1987 Promotional Video for Commodore Amiga Computers.

Latest discoveries as per post date:

CASE #1:
-----------
"A musical note going through a wall, breaking it with water drops and splashes"
I do not yet still know the "filename" or "title" of this artwork, but found traces of the same image via Google Image search into Facebook and Twitter. Research is still pending. Was it ever saved on any Amiga related disk?

As I dont have any Facebook account NOR Twitter account I am unable to see any more details of the image and/or contacts these people to query just the "title" or "filename" which I could then use to search through my 44 millions or Amiga Files or in other search database I have generated the past 13 years.

CASE #2:
------------
Ballet dancer. Most likely its based on this "trimmed?" animation script compatible for Aegis Animator. I found this animation on: "grandis.nu\Collection\PD\RiSe PD Collection\faug_archived\faug17.dms".

Called "Ballet.script" inside a directory called "Ballet.PLAYER". See screenshots below!

CASE #3:
-----------
Woman face with a large earring. From video: Picture is called "Earrings".

Found on disk:
"back2roots_compilation\slipdisk\adf\00xx\slipdisk-0034.adf". Converted from .iff to .png of the exact same "Earrings" image. See image below!

CASE #4:
------------
Psychedelic faces and color cycling using a genlock and Amiga.
From video: They used clips generated using an Amiga from a music video called "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades" by Timbuk 3.

You can watch it on Youtube below.

CASE #5:
-----------
From Video: They loaded "Pages/Birthday" or "med-res/Birthday" into Deluxe Print.

Fun fact: Software title was never written as caption or mentioned as speech.

Example of its location:
"TOSEC\Update 20191224\Applications - [ADF] (TOSEC-v2019-12-10)\Deluxe Print (1986)(Electronic Arts)(Disk 2 of 4)(Art 1).adf"

CASE #6:
-----------
From video: A collage of clipart done in Deluxe Video. Part of this was a image file called "Swimmer" taken from the "med-res" directory of Deluxe Print.

"Swimmer" Found on for example:
TOSEC\Update 20191224\Applications - [ADF] (TOSEC-v2019-12-10)\Deluxe Print (1986)(Electronic Arts)(Disk 2 of 4)(Art 1).adf

CASE #7:
-----------
From video: Image used is called "p_51.iff" where each plane is cut and then move-animated on screen.

I did not find any script that used it, but the image itself I managed to locate on:

"grandis.nu/cd/amigacd/compilation/giga graphic cds/giga_graphic_cd_3.iso" inside the "p06/" directory.

CASE #1:
-----------
This image taken from the video, taken from 1 Part 1 - "Jeg er vakker" / "I am beautiful", which deals with graphics related software.

I managed to trace down the original artist, which is called "Brummbaer" or "Brummbar" or the german version which is "Brummbär"

Through Google Lens, I found a facebook post:
works-by-brummbaer-198789-amiga-deluxe-paint-ever-modest-with-regard-to-the-magi

On Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brummbaer

Even at twitter:
DISK SURF Ltd. on X: "Works by Brummbaer (1987-89, Amiga Deluxe Paint) https://t.co/8sausT2WXD" / X

CASE #1:
-----------
Screenshot from that facebook post with the same image.

CASE #1:
-----------
The full image from the same Facebook post, it appears cropped.

CASE #1:
-----------
Almost same as the Facebook post, but this is on Twitter.

CASE #1:
-----------
Now, this full screen image looks more like the original as shown in the Amiga video, apart from the credits artwork in the corner, and the missing "dots?" or "barcodes?" as seen in the Commodore 1987 movie.

The image on Twitter reveals 1987 as the creation date. With the credits shown as:
"BRUMM-"
"B A E R"

CASE #1:
------------
Potentional of where the actual file (IFF) could be represented on Amiga Disks was found in a disk called "Brummbar's Backgrounds" from Software Sensations from and advertisement block in for example "Amazing Computing Guide spring 1989" magazine.

I have been unable to find any references to either "Brummbar" / "Brummbaer" or even "Software Sensations" in any of the millions of Amiga disks/files I have!

One could imagine that the musical note image was part of the "backgrounds" mentioned here :-)

For now - this seems like a true lost media.

CASE #2:
-----------
The ballet dancer from the original Amiga movie.

CASE #2:
Most likely its based on this "trimmed?" animation script compatible for Aegis Animator. I found this animation on: "grandis.nu\Collection\PD\RiSe PD Collection\faug_archived\faug17.dms".

Called "Ballet.script" inside a directory called "Ballet.PLAYER".

CASE #3:
From video: Picture is called "Earrings".

Found on disk:
"back2roots_compilation\slipdisk\adf\00xx\slipdisk-0034.adf"

CASE #3:
Converted from .iff to .png of the exact same "Earrings" image.

CASE #4:
From video: They used clips generated using an Amiga from a music video called "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades" by Timbuk 3.

You can watch it on Youtube!

Screenshot from actual Deluxe Print and Birthday template from WinuAE
